Game Report - Game 1, Tokyo [Mar. 26th, 2008|02:15 am]
The Fenway Faithful

[Current Location |Yokosuka, Japan]
[Current Mood |sleepysleepy]

Just got home from the game an hour or two ago and have been prepping this post for you all. It was an amazing experience, though very, very different from going to a game in the US. I think the biggest difference was how very quiet it was, and how well dressed most of the locals were, a lot of people having come straight from the office in suits.

Expats were out in force, military, teachers, execs and students, and there was a really fesive feeling that rocked. A lot of the Westerners were mouthing off at each other, being brash Sox fans in a way that really seemed to baffle the Japanese fans. Ah well. We tried to make up for the lack of the Nation in force. I absolutely confounded the salarymen in front of us. I don't think they've ever heard a girl make that much noise before. :D The crowd finally started to make some noise around the 8th inning, but still, positively library-quiet compared to a regular Sox game.

Looking forward to going back tomorrow now that I have a better handle on it.

Lines of the game (from me, my seatmates, other people at the bar...):
"Wait. It's the ninth inning, and people are sitting down? WTF?"
"It's nice to see Oakland's opening up the year with a series of plays that have less balls than a girl on girl film festival."
"There's a guy in a Yankees jersey. What is he, stupid?" "He is wearing a Yankees jersey."
"What's with all the gangsta rap for the A's intros? Do they think they're the second string for the Raiders or something?"

Ticket Front Ticket Front
Ticket Back Ticket Back
Outside the stadium Outside the stadium
The cherry trees are beginning to bloom.
Pub Pub
Just outside the stadium is a pub that was packed with expats.
Matsuzaka Fans Matsuzaka Fans
At the pub before hand, and quite popular!
Schoolgirls Schoolgirls
Walking by, they yelled at us and took our picture. I returned the favor.
The Village Idiots The Village Idiots
Literally the only Yankees jersey I saw all day. Brave, or stupid? You decide.
Tokyo Dome Tokyo Dome
My first view. Pretty!
Baseball Hall of Fame Baseball Hall of Fame
The Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame at the Tokyo Dome.
First view of the field First view of the field
They were doing some traditional group dances when I first got a look at the field.

My first seat. My first seat.
Band Band
Combined US Army and US Navy band.
Flower presentation Flower presentation
Most major occasions in Japan involve presenting bouquets. I'm not sure why.
First pitch First pitch
Yoshiro Mori is a former Prime Minister of Japan.
First Pitch First Pitch
He landed it! He landed it!
All the way!
O-bento O-bento
Japanese box lunch, bought at the stadium.
O-bento O-bento
Pretty tasty, all told. Cost 1000 yen (about ten bucks) but was nice and filling. Cold pork slices, spaghetti, macaroni salad, potato wedges, mini arabiki sausage (a lot like a cocktail frank), and rice with a salted plum in the middle.

The lack of dirt base lines is weeeeird.
Beer girl! Beer girl!
The beer girls were humping mini kegs on their backs like Marines. It was awesome.
Soda Soda
Because I felt like it.
Noise makers Noise makers
Inflatable Japanese noisemakers. You bang them together and it makes a surprising amount of noise. Originally handed out in packets that look like Kleenex.
Pagoda Games Pagoda Games
So that dumb jumbotron version of the shell/hat/cup game? Yeah, they put up pagodas and did the same thing here.
Biru, o kudasai! Biru, o kudasai!
Had to. Beer, baseball...
Second seat Second seat
After deciding I was going to end up decing my previous seatmates, I found more congenial company.

Tokyo Dome Sandwich Tokyo Dome Sandwich
A vendor was walking by, I figured it was time for an experiment. God only knows what's in it.
Tokyo Dome Sandwich Tokyo Dome Sandwich
In the name of SCIENCE!!! It's a vanilla ice cream thingy shaped like the stadium! Pretty darn good, too.
Cheering Cheering
So many expats in the crowd!
They didn't... They didn't...
Yup. They did.
The Clowns The Clowns
These guys kept a whole section lit on fire. I got to lead cheers with them for a bit.
Send in the Clowns! Send in the Clowns!
Five clowns - four Kiwis and an American.

Hot Dog Hot Dog
Had to try it for tradition's sake, and the condiment delivery system was pretty neat.
Hot Dog, Revealed Hot Dog, Revealed
Tragically, the dog was disappointingly bland.
Field logo Field logo
Massholes in residence! Massholes in residence!
One section over, these guys kept the party going.

Noise makers Noise makers
I really like these little suckers!
Leaving the Tokyo Dome Leaving the Tokyo Dome
See you tomorrow, pretty trees!

Back at the pub, just prior to catching our bus, ran into a couple of guys from Yokota Air Force Base. They lacked a camera.

Thank you very much for posting these. It looks as if you had a much better time than I did. I was sitting at a bar at 3am watching the game with 4 Sox fans and 2 Yankee fans. I enjoyed myself, but you obviously had a great night.

You're very welcome! How was it at the bar? Out here we watched the Super Bowl at 8 AM on a Monday morning, and being at a bar that early is kinda fun and odd, I think.

I couldn't figure out what was bugging me while I was watching the game until I read your post.

Lack of dirt on the base paths. Duh.

Thanks for posting.

It took me a couple innings to figure out what looked weird about the field outside of a lack of creatively mowed patterns.

Glad you enjoyed reading it!
